Tinubu Urges Local Governments to Enhance Grassroots Impact

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, addressed the 774 local government chairmen at the Annual National Conference held from September 22 to 24, 2026. The conference, themed ‘Cascading President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda to the Grassroots,’ focused on the significance of grassroots governance.

Tinubu recalled his experience as Lagos State Governor, highlighting the creation of 37 local council development areas to enhance local governance. He affirmed the importance of local government financial autonomy, referencing the Supreme Court's historic judgment on July 11, 2024.

The president urged local leaders to improve primary healthcare, education, and infrastructure while fostering community security through collaboration with traditional and religious leaders. He called for active participation in development initiatives and encouraged the chairmen to propose solutions to challenges hindering local government development.
