Court to Hear Lawsuit for Obi's Security Ahead of 2027

The Federal High Court in Abuja has accepted for hearing a lawsuit seeking to compel President Bola Tinubu to provide maximum security for Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), in anticipation of the 2027 general election. The case, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1648/2026, was filed by lawyers Okere Kingdom Nnamdi and Joseph Enemona Amen, along with the Incorporated Trustees of Rights For All.

Defendants include President Tinubu, the Attorney-General of the Federation, the Inspector-General of Police, the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), the Commandant-General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo. The applicants argue that Obi has a constitutional right to life and should not face intimidation or threats.

This lawsuit follows comments from Governor Okpebholo, who warned Obi against entering Edo State without security clearance, linking a previous visit by Obi to violence. The court has yet to set a date for proceedings.
