Tinubu, Governors Plan October Fare Cuts Via CNG, Electric Vehicles

President Tinubu and state governors agreed to reduce transport fares nationwide using compressed natural gas and electric vehicles, effective October 1.
President Bola Tinubu and Nigeria's state governors have committed to lowering transportation fares across the country through a shift toward alternative fuels. The announcement came after a meeting between the President and the Governors' Forum on August 27, 2026, with implementation set to begin on October 1, 2026.
The strategy centers on two primary fuel alternatives: compressed natural gas (CNG) and electric vehicles. Both the Federal Government and state administrations have agreed to coordinate efforts ensuring that cost savings from these cleaner fuels translate directly into reduced fares for commuters.
A joint committee has been established to oversee the rollout across states. The initiative addresses Nigeria's persistent transportation cost challenges, which have strained household budgets and affected commerce.
By transitioning vehicle fleets to CNG and electric power, the government aims to decrease fuel expenses, the primary driver of fare increases in recent years. State governors reportedly resolved independently to implement these measures within their jurisdictions.
The October 1 deadline gives stakeholders roughly five weeks to prepare infrastructure and logistics. State governments are expected to play an active role in facilitating the transition, working alongside federal agencies to ensure the coordination needed for a nationwide rollout.
