Tinubu Orders Reopening of Nigeria–Benin Border to Enhance Trade and Security

On February 7, 2026, Tinubu, a prominent political figure, ordered the reopening of the Nigeria–Benin border, specifically the Samiya International Border in Kebbi State. The directive was made public during an official visit to the area.

The Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewal Adeniyi, addressed customs officials, warning against smuggling and illegal activities that undermine government policies. The reopening of the border is intended to facilitate smoother movement, enhance security measures, and ensure timely cargo clearance within 48 hours.

Advanced technology will be utilized to track goods and prevent diversions. Tinubu also approved the movement of trucks between Benin Republic, Kebbi State, and Niger Republic, with a focus on enforcing transit rules to avoid penalties for non-compliance.

The Customs boss was accompanied by senior officials from the Benin Republic Customs Service, led by Imura Idiris.
