Tinubu Urges AU to Address Xenophobic Attacks in SA

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu brought Nigeria's concerns regarding xenophobic and Afrophobic attacks in South Africa to the African Union during the 21st Extraordinary Session of the AU Assembly in Luanda, Angola. He formally requested that the issue be included in the agenda for the 40th Ordinary Session of the AU Assembly scheduled for January 2027.

Tinubu emphasized that such attacks undermine African solidarity and require a collective response from the continent. He acknowledged South Africa's right to enforce immigration laws but stressed the need for dialogue and preventive diplomacy among African leaders.

Additionally, he addressed broader security challenges in Africa, advocating for the adoption of the Luanda Action Plan for conflict prevention and expressing concerns over foreign military presence on the continent. Tinubu called for member states to recommit to African ownership of continental affairs and urged arms-producing countries to collaborate with African governments to prevent weapons diversion to non-state actors.
