Sowore Accuses Tinubu of Imposing Harsh Bail Conditions

On July 18, 2026, Omoyele Sowore, a member of the African Action Congress, claimed that President Bola Tinubu is responsible for the harsh bail conditions that prevent suspects from being released from custody. Sowore made this statement on his official social media page while discussing the plight of inmates at Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja, where 1,115 inmates are currently held, with 817 awaiting trial.

He specifically referenced Haruna Garba Gololo, who has been in custody for nearly three weeks despite a court order granting him bail, due to the inability to meet the imposed conditions. Sowore also mentioned David Nwokori, who spent close to four months in detention after being granted bail by Justice Rita Ajumogobia of the Federal High Court.

Nwokori's bail conditions required him to provide a level 16 civil servant and a Nigerian Army colonel as sureties, which Sowore described as almost impossible. Additionally, Sowore noted that 47 inmates at the facility are reportedly diagnosed with tuberculosis.

The Nigerian Police Force and the Ministry of Interior did not respond to Sowore's allegations at the time of the report.
