Togo Extradites Former Burkina Faso Leader Facing Coup Charges

Togo has extradited former Burkina Faso leader, Paul Henri Sandaogo Damiba, back to his country to face charges related to a coup attempt. Damiba took control of Burkina Faso in January 2022 but was removed from power nine months later in a coup led by Captain Ibrahim Traoré.

Damiba has been repeatedly accusing the current military leadership of plotting to overthrow the government. He was arrested in Lome following an arrest warrant and extradition request issued by Burkina Faso.

The extradition was carried out to ensure Damiba's safety, rights, fair trial, and protection. Despite facing serious charges, he will not face the death penalty.
