Ezekwesili Accuses Nigeria's Elite of Profiting from Insecurity

On August 27, former Minister of Education Obiageli Ezekwesili accused Nigeria’s power elite and military establishment of profiting from the country's ongoing battle against terrorism and insecurity. In an interview with News Central Television, she described the fight against terrorism as an “industry” for those in power.

Ezekwesili questioned the government's effectiveness in addressing insecurity and demanded accountability for the trillions of naira allegedly spent on security. She emphasized that Nigerians deserve to know the outcomes of these expenditures, especially as violent crimes persist.

Ezekwesili criticized the government's failure to prioritize citizen protection, warning that indifference to attacks could embolden enemies. She supported the establishment of state police but stressed that effective security reforms depend on clear responsibilities and professional conduct among security agencies.

Additionally, she noted the Nigeria Police Force's weaknesses, which have led to increased military involvement in internal security operations.
