Trump Commends Tinubu for Leadership Against Terrorism

President Donald Trump of the United States commended Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his decisive leadership in addressing terrorism and insecurity in Nigeria, particularly concerning the protection of the Christian community. This commendation was conveyed in a letter dated July 6, 2026, and made public by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

The letter emphasized the importance of the U.S.-Nigeria relationship, especially in light of growing conflict in West Africa. Trump praised Tinubu's efforts to tackle violence affecting Christian communities and reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to supporting Nigeria's fight against terrorism.

He noted the deployment of U.S. Special Operations Forces to assist the Nigerian Armed Forces.

The partnership has been strengthened through a Joint Working Group co-chaired by the National Security Advisers of both nations, focusing on training, intelligence sharing, and joint operations against terrorist groups. A significant outcome of this cooperation was a joint operation on May 16 that resulted in the killing of ISIS leader Abubakar Al-Minoki.
