UBTH Cancer Treatment Centre Fully Operational, CMD Says

The Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Prof. Ida Ize-Iyamu, announced that the Cancer Treatment Centre is now fully operational and recognized as one of the largest in Nigeria. This announcement was made during the inauguration of a state-of-the-art ambulance in Benin.

Prof. Ize-Iyamu expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the establishment of the centre and highlighted its significance as one of only three cancer treatment centres in Nigeria. She noted that the centre now offers accessible cancer treatment for low-income patients through the Cancer Health Fund, approved by Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Alli Pate.

The CMD described the ambulance as a "walking theatre," capable of providing emergency medical interventions during patient transport. She emphasized the centre's advanced equipment, including a Linear accelerator and a 16-slice CT scanner.

Despite challenges faced by the institution, Prof. Ize-Iyamu remains optimistic about the centre's capabilities in combating cancer.
