UK Sets 12-Month Limit for Graduate Trainee Visa Holders

The UK government has published official guidance regarding the Graduate Trainee visa, clarifying that holders can remain in the United Kingdom for a maximum of 12 months or the duration specified on their certificate of sponsorship plus an additional 14 days, whichever is shorter. This means that no Graduate Trainee visa holder can stay in the UK beyond one year, regardless of their sponsorship certificate's duration.

Importantly, Graduate Trainee visa holders cannot extend their visa while in the UK; they must leave once their permitted period expires. However, individuals can apply for a new Graduate Trainee visa from outside the UK.

The Graduate Trainee visa is intended for workers transferred to the UK as part of an intra-company graduate training programme and requires a certificate of sponsorship from an approved UK employer. Applicants are advised to carefully review their sponsorship certificate and plan their stay accordingly, as the 14-day buffer is meant for travel and departure, not for continued employment.
