UK Sets Work Hour Limits for Student Visa Holders in 2026

The United Kingdom government has announced the working hour limits for international students holding student visas, effective in 2026. Students enrolled in full-time courses at degree level or above, sponsored by a higher education provider with a compliance record, are permitted to work up to 20 hours per week during term-time.

They may also work full-time outside of term-time. Conversely, students on full-time courses below degree level, also sponsored by compliant higher education providers, face a stricter limit of 10 hours per week during term-time, but can work full-time outside of these periods.

Students in all other categories, including those on part-time study arrangements, are prohibited from any form of employment. Additionally, students may undertake work placements that are integral to their course, and exceptions exist for those elected as Student Union Sabbatical Officers or to National Union of Students positions, allowing them to work in that capacity for up to two years if their Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies was specifically assigned for that purpose.
