UK Allows Modern Slavery Victims to Switch Employers

On September 3, the UK Home Office announced a significant change to its immigration rules, allowing foreign nationals formally identified as victims of modern slavery to leave exploitative employers and take up new employment without jeopardizing their right to remain in the country. This policy specifically affects workers on Skilled Worker visas, whose immigration status was previously tied to a specific employer.

Under the old rules, leaving a sponsoring employer could result in losing their visa, a situation that critics argued made many workers vulnerable to abuse. The Home Office stated that recognized victims holding Skilled Worker visas would now have the freedom to seek new employment.

The announcement has garnered various responses online, especially from Nigerians in the UK care and support sector. However, it was noted that workers must first navigate the National Referral Mechanism to be formally identified as victims of modern slavery.

The Home Office has yet to provide detailed guidance on the implementation of this policy.
