UK Appoints Alastair Long as Trade Commissioner for Africa

On September 7, 2023, the UK Government announced the appointment of Alastair Long as His Majesty’s Trade Commissioner (HMTC) for Africa, tasked with strengthening trade and investment relations between the UK and African countries. This announcement was made by the UK High Commission in Nigeria.

Long succeeds John Humphrey, who held the position since June 2022. In his new role, Long will collaborate with African governments, investors, businesses, and regional institutions to unlock economic opportunities and foster mutually beneficial trade relationships.

Long expressed enthusiasm for his appointment, recognizing Africa's potential and ambition. He has previously served as Deputy Trade Commissioner and Acting Trade Commissioner for Africa from 2019 to 2022 and was the UK’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of Bahrain from August 2023.

The UK Government emphasized that Long's extensive experience would accelerate its commercial ambitions in Africa, particularly in supporting small and medium-sized enterprises. Outgoing Trade Commissioner John Humphrey acknowledged the privilege of serving in the role and expressed confidence in Long's ability to deepen economic cooperation.
