UK Grants Emergency Visa Extension to Nigerian Prison Staff Amid Staffing Crisis

The UK government has approved emergency visa extensions for hundreds of Nigerian prison staff to address a looming staffing crisis. The decision follows warnings that several correctional facilities in Nigeria face severe staff shortages.

The exemption from salary thresholds will apply to those already in the UK until the end of 2026, with reduced thresholds continuing to apply until December 31, 2027. The move has been welcomed by the Prison Officers Association, with concerns raised over the impact of increased salary thresholds on overseas recruitment.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood initially opposed the exemption, emphasizing the importance of recruiting British citizens, while Justice Secretary David Lammy reportedly stressed the need for local recruitment to meet immediate prison capacity needs.
