UK Implements Mandatory ETA for 85 Countries Travelers

The United Kingdom has launched a new travel system requiring visitors from 85 countries to obtain an electronic travel authorization (ETA) for entry, effective Wednesday. This measure affects citizens from countries including the United States and Australia, who previously enjoyed visa-free travel for up to six months for tourism, business, or short-term study.

The ETA is valid for two years or until the applicant's passport expires and allows multiple visits. Applications must be submitted online, preferably via the official app available on Google Play and the App Store, requiring passport information, contact details, a photo, and answers to several questions.

Approval is issued within minutes, but travelers are advised to apply at least three working days before travel. The ETA costs £16, with indications of a possible increase to £20.

British and Irish citizens, as well as certain schoolchildren, are exempt from this requirement. The UK Home Office has confirmed that the ETA is part of an ongoing public advisory campaign set for release in October 2024.
