UK to Lead Military Talks on Reopening Hormuz Strait

The United Kingdom is set to host military talks aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial passage for global oil transport. The discussions will involve 30 nations and will be chaired by UK Chief of Defence Staff Richard Knighton and French Chief of Defence Staff Fabien Mandon.

This initiative follows a statement from 24 countries endorsing the effort to ensure safe passage through the strait, which has been under threat due to rising tensions with Iran. The talks are scheduled to begin on Sunday, with the initial six countries, including Canada, participating.

The UK has offered to host a later summit at Portsmouth to further build the coalition necessary for reopening the strait under the right conditions. The situation escalated after a US-Israeli strike on February 28, which caused global oil prices to soar.

The International Maritime Organization has emphasized the need for safety and security regulations for vessels in the area.
