UK Increases Minimum Stipend for PhD Students to N40m, Benefiting Nigerian Scholars

The UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) has revealed plans to raise the minimum stipend for PhD students to N40 million in the upcoming academic year, starting from October 1, 2026. This increase, amounting to a rise of £21,805 to £20,780 annually, aims to support thousands of doctoral candidates across universities and research institutions in the United Kingdom, including Nigerian students.

The adjustment is designed to alleviate the financial burden faced by international students, especially in cities like London where living costs are significantly higher. The move has been welcomed by student groups and the academic community, although there are ongoing campaigns for larger stipend increases to better reflect the real cost of living.
