Umahi Sets 72-Hour Deadline for Abuja-Lokoja Highway Contractors

Works Minister David Umahi has ordered contractors on the Abuja-Lokoja highway project to mobilise within 72 hours or face EFCC prosecution.
Works Minister David Umahi has issued a strict 72-hour deadline to contractors handling the Abuja-Lokoja highway rehabilitation project, threatening legal action if they fail to mobilise to site. During an inspection tour on Tuesday alongside members of the National Assembly's works committees, Umahi made clear that the federal government will no longer tolerate delays on the project.
The minister warned that contractors who have already received government funding but failed to meet their obligations will face prosecution under anti-corruption laws, with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) prepared to take action. Umahi stated that President Bola Tinubu has already approved and released funds for the project, and expects all parties involved to deploy equipment and personnel immediately to begin active work.
The minister expressed dissatisfaction with the project's pace, citing the suffering of commuters using the route. He emphasised that federal highways cannot remain closed for extended periods during construction and demanded contractors honour their commitments without further delays.
One source indicated that contractors face a 14-day window to show improvement before contract termination becomes possible, though the primary reported deadline from multiple sources remains the 72-hour mobilisation requirement. Umahi acknowledged that funding constraints have led to adjustments in project scope on certain sections of the highway, reducing one segment from 49.28 kilometres to 28 kilometres.
