UNILAG Maritime Institute to Boost Nigeria's Blue Economy

On Thursday, Governor Adegboyega Oyetola inaugurated the Maritime Institute at the University of Lagos, describing it as a significant step toward strengthening human capital and institutional capacity in Nigeria's maritime sector. The project, commissioned at a multi-purpose building, is seen as a milestone in advancing Nigeria's blue economy.

Oyetola noted that maritime activities are central to Nigeria's economy, with 90 percent of trade conducted via maritime channels. He emphasized the need for policies that support the maritime sector, while Dayo Mobereola, Director General of NIMASA, affirmed the agency's commitment to developing human capital as a core strength of the industry.

Folasade Ogunshola, Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, highlighted the institute's role in developing maritime expertise across Africa. The facility will feature modern classrooms and laboratories designed to support advanced learning and research in maritime studies, reflecting a commitment to knowledge-driven development.
