EFCC Freezes Osun State Government Account, Sparks Outrage

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has frozen the account of the Osun State government, prompting significant backlash from various organizations, including the state government and the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Governor Senator Ademola Adeleke condemned the action as illegal and a threat to democracy, stating that the EFCC acted without a court order.

He received notification of the freeze from the bank and alleged that this move is part of a broader pattern of intimidation against Osun residents ahead of the August 15 governorship election. Adeleke accused former Governor Gboyega Oyetola of orchestrating attacks and harassment against members of the Accord party, claiming that 60 Accord members have been arrested and several killed.

He has instructed the State Attorney General, Oluwole Jimi Bada, to challenge the EFCC's decision in the Federal High Court in Osogbo. The EFCC has stated that the account freeze is in the best interest of the state and is part of an ongoing investigation into alleged fraudulent activities by the Osun State government since March 2026.
