Nigerian Basketball Player Arrested for Rape in Alabama

Daniel Adegboyega, a 21-year-old Nigerian basketball player who recently joined Jacksonville State University’s men’s basketball team, was arrested in July in Jacksonville, Alabama, and charged with first-degree rape by forcible compulsion. He is currently held at the Calhoun County Jail without bond.

The United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement has placed an immigration hold on him. According to police investigator Andrew Swain, the alleged victim visited Adegboyega’s apartment on July 28 to watch a movie, where he allegedly made unwanted sexual advances.

The victim texted her roommate for help, leading to police intervention. Officers found her visibly distressed, and she alleged that Adegboyega forcibly raped her twice.

Evidence, including clothing stained with blood, was recovered. Adegboyega has pleaded not guilty.

During a bond hearing, ICE agent Ty Unruh stated that Adegboyega's F-1 student visa expired in 2023, and if granted bond, he would face immigration proceedings that could lead to deportation. Adegboyega’s host father, Ryan Parlee, disputed the immigration claims, citing administrative errors.

Jacksonville State University has removed Adegboyega’s profile from their website. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for August 31.
