Trump Praises Tinubu’s Leadership Against Terrorism

In a letter dated July 6, 2026, US President Donald Trump commended Nigerian President Bola Tinubu for his decisive leadership in addressing terrorism, particularly violence against Christian communities in Nigeria. Trump expressed his honor in standing with Tinubu to strengthen Nigeria and combat terrorism.

The letter highlighted the flourishing US-Nigeria relationship, emphasizing cooperation in security matters. In November 2025, Trump and Tinubu established a Joint Working Group co-headed by the National Security Advisers of both countries, focusing on training, intelligence sharing, and joint operations to counter terrorism.

A significant outcome of this collaboration was a coordinated attack on May 16, 2026, targeting ISIS hideouts in the Lake Chad area, resulting in the death of ISIS leader Abubakar Al-Minoki and several lieutenants. Additionally, US Assistant Secretary of State for Africa, Frank Garcia, visited Abuja to reinforce cooperation in security and other areas.
