U.S. Spends $40M on Migrant Deportations to Third Countries

The U.S. government, under the administration of Donald Trump, allocated over $40 million for the deportation of roughly 300 migrants to third countries, as revealed in a report released by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on a Friday. This financial policy implicates a controversial deportation strategy that relocates non-citizens to third countries when their home nations refuse to accept them back.

The average cost of deportation was approximately $133,333 per person, with Rwanda receiving seven deportees, leading to a total cost of around $1.1 million per person. The report details a policy involving the relocation of migrants to remote countries to ensure their removal when repatriation to their home nations proves difficult.

The deportation strategy is expected to gain traction as Donald Trump returns to office in 2025, intensifying immigration enforcement efforts. Last month, the U.S.

Department of Homeland Security listed it as one of the worst criminal registries as part of renewed enforcement efforts targeting foreign nationals with serious criminal convictions.
