Professor Advocates for Accountability in Nigeria's Governance

During the 24th Inaugural Lecture at Prince Abubakar Audu University in Anyigba, Professor Sani Rufai Abdullahi emphasized the need for stronger institutions, ethical leadership, and value-driven governance to enhance accountability and public trust in Nigeria. His lecture, titled “Epistemology of Accountability: Societal and Religious Concerns,” explored the philosophical foundations of accountability, highlighting its societal and religious dimensions as vital for good governance and ethical conduct.

Professor Abdullahi defined accountability as a cornerstone of moral and social order, essential for trust, justice, and responsible leadership. He noted that while societal accountability is maintained through laws and norms, religious accountability imposes moral obligations before God.

He identified transparency, answerability, and enforcement as key attributes of accountability and discussed the societal responsibilities to stakeholders and the importance of corporate social responsibility. Furthermore, he pointed out challenges to accountability, including corruption and declining moral values, and advocated for integrating ethics and civic responsibility into educational curricula.
