Nigerian University Staff Demand 100% Salary Increase

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), led by Dr. Abdussobur Olayiwola, is demanding a 100% salary increase from the federal government, citing worsening economic conditions and a significant rise in the cost of living since the last salary review. In an interview, Olayiwola indicated that the union's demand is based on the current economic realities, including the price of petrol, which has increased from N65 per liter in 2009 to between N1,300 and N1,500 today.

The union has given the federal government a 30-day ultimatum, from April 1 to April 30, 2026, to conclude the renegotiation process and sign an agreement. The government’s current offer was described as unacceptable by the union, which has requested a review and consultation for possible adjustments.

The meeting with the federal government’s renegotiation committee, led by Mahmud Yayal, was adjourned, with the union emphasizing the need for a salary adjustment that reflects the current economic situation.
