Nigeria's Power Minister Tegbe to End Subsidies by 2027

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced its intention to phase out subsidy payments in the power sector starting in 2027. This decision was disclosed by the Minister of Power, Tegbe, during a media interactive session where he addressed the significant debt burden in the sector.

Tegbe emphasized that the government is mandated by the president to clear legacy debts and establish sustainable structures to prevent further liabilities. He assured consumers that the removal of the subsidy would not diminish existing benefits, promising improvements in power supply.

Tegbe stated, “I promise you, next year, by God’s grace, we will put a stop to this so-called subsidy in the power sector.” He also noted that there are no immediate plans to increase electricity tariffs. Recent improvements in electricity supply were highlighted, with some areas now receiving up to 18 hours of power daily, a significant increase from previous outages.

Tegbe made these remarks while commissioning a 3-megawatt solar hybrid power project at Yakubu Gowon University.
