Volunteers Combat Ebola Misinformation in Eastern Congo

In Eastern Congo, volunteers are working to counter misinformation surrounding the Ebola outbreak, particularly the Bundibugyo strain, as declared a global health emergency by the World Health Organization earlier this week. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has deployed a team to engage residents in Mongbwalu, the epicenter of the outbreak, to educate them on preventive measures and encourage early medical attention for suspected cases.

Despite these efforts, reactions among residents remain divided; some accept the seriousness of the outbreak and follow safety advice, while others continue to believe false claims that Ebola is not real. Family members of victims dispute the cause of death and wish to conduct traditional burial rites, which health experts warn is unsafe due to the high infectivity of Ebola victims' bodies.

Gabriela Arena from IFRC stressed the importance of community trust and local engagement in controlling the disease's spread, noting that fear and a lack of reliable information continue to fuel dangerous rumors.
