Easter Celebrations in Jerusalem Hampered by Security Measures

Easter Sunday celebrations at the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem were overshadowed by ongoing war and security restrictions that limited access for worshippers. Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, entered the church at dawn surrounded by a modest group of clergy.

Many Catholic and Orthodox Christians were prevented from reaching the church due to police checkpoints, which heightened the sense of emptiness during the holiday. Christina Toderă, a 44-year-old worshipper from Romania, expressed disappointment at the inability to attend the mass in person, stating that it was hard to celebrate Easter with everything closed.

The Israeli police had imposed restrictions on large gatherings as a security precaution due to the constant threat of strikes amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The situation was further complicated by a previous incident where Israeli police prevented access to the Holy Sepulchre during a mass, leading to outrage from religious leaders.
