Waspapping's Arrest Sparks Debate on Free Speech in Nigeria

Waspapping, a social media critic, was arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) in Kaduna State following several controversial posts made on social media, particularly on the conflict involving Israel, Iran, and the United States. Reports indicate that his arrest occurred in early March 2026 after he expressed strong criticism of the U.S. and Israel while supporting Iran during the ongoing Middle East crisis.

His detention quickly became a topic of discussion among Nigerian social media users, raising questions about the implications of expressing political opinions online. Following public outcry, Waspapping was released after several days in custody, although certain restrictions remained in place.

Human rights organization Amnesty International condemned his arrest, expressing deep concern over the increasing clampdown on social media commentary in Nigeria. The popular Hausa musician Nazir Ahmad, known as Sarkin Waka, openly criticized the arrest, emphasizing the need for freedom of speech.

Waspapping later clarified that his posts were intended to contribute to political debate rather than attack the country.
