CITAD Condemns Detention of Kano Residents for Comments

The Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) has expressed deep concern regarding the continued detention of two residents from Kano, Sani Waspa and Abubakar Adamu, by the Department of State Services (DSS). Their detention stems from comments made on social media that are connected to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

In a statement signed by CITAD's Executive Director, Y. Z.

Ya'u, the organization highlighted that such actions are troubling and inconsistent with the constitutional guarantee of freedom of expression as outlined in Section 39 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. CITAD emphasized the need for the DSS to respect citizens' rights to peacefully express their opinions and warned that such actions could undermine constitutional protections for freedom.

The organization is particularly concerned about the implications of targeting individuals for their online civic engagement.
