U.S. Lawmaker Cruz Accuses Nigeria of Christian Persecution

U.S. Senator Ted Cruz claimed that the Nigerian government officials are responsible for creating conditions that enable the persecution and killing of Christians in Nigeria, suggesting that Washington should impose sanctions.

His remarks came in response to a deadly attack on March 29, 2026, in Angwan Rukuba, Plateau State, where gunmen killed at least 12 individuals, including 10 men and two women. Cruz emphasized that the U.S. is aware of the situation and has tools to hold Nigerian officials accountable.

Following the attack, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang visited the bereaved community, promising that justice would be pursued relentlessly. He also announced that the state government would cover medical bills for the injured and ensure dignified burials for the deceased.

A 48-hour curfew was imposed in the area, and additional security personnel were deployed to restore order. The incident has intensified diplomatic tensions between Washington and Abuja regarding the treatment of Christians in Nigeria.
