Mel Gibson Replaces Jim Caviezel in Jesus Sequel

Mel Gibson has decided to replace Jim Caviezel with Finnish actor Jaakko Ohtonen in the sequel to "The Passion of the Christ," titled "Resurrection," which is set to release on May 6, 2027. The original film, released in 2004, featured Caviezel as Jesus, but Gibson cited the need for a younger actor due to the 22-year gap since the first film.

Caviezel, now 57, would not convincingly portray Jesus immediately following the crucifixion. Gibson opted for a fresh face to avoid extensive digital de-aging technology, which he felt could detract from the film's authenticity.

The sequel will explore the three days following Christ's crucifixion and will delve into supernatural realms, marking a significant stylistic shift from the original. The sequel is described as having a grittier realism, with Gibson emphasizing a creative vision that does not rely on sentimentality.

The second part of the sequel is scheduled for release on May 25, 2028.
