Police Explain Blocking of Peter Obi's Convoy in Benue

Cletus Nwadiogbu, the Benue State Commissioner of Police, clarified the circumstances surrounding the blocking of Peter Obi's convoy during his visit to the state. He stated that the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) had informed the police about Obi's planned visit but failed to request that the notification letter be forwarded to Governor Hyacinth Alia.

The incident occurred on a Tuesday when youths obstructed Obi's convoy on the Makurdi-Gboko Federal Highway as he traveled to Yelwata in Guma Local Government Area to sympathize with residents affected by recent violent attacks. Following the incident, the police arrested 46 individuals allegedly connected to the obstruction, with ongoing investigations to identify others involved.

Nwadiogbu emphasized that the police's decision not to force their way through the crowd was to prevent potential violence and casualties. Obi was eventually escorted back to the airport.

The Inter Party Advisory Council condemned the incident, labeling it unacceptable ahead of the 2027 general elections.
