Ogun State Police Clarify Legal Basis for Restricting Phones in Stations

The Ogun State Police Command, through its Public Relations Officer Oluseyi Babaseyi, explained the rationale behind restricting mobile phones within police stations, primarily citing security concerns. This measure follows public inquiries raised by a user named Salami Quadri regarding the legality of the restriction.

Babaseyi highlighted that Nigerian law permits such restrictions to safeguard investigations, suspects, and police operations. He emphasized the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to uphold citizens' fundamental rights, including the presumption of innocence and due process.

While acknowledging constitutional rights, Babaseyi noted that certain rights can be lawfully regulated in the interest of public safety and order. The Police Act of 2020 empowers the police to regulate activities within their facilities to prevent security breaches and protect ongoing investigations.

The restriction on phone usage in sensitive areas of police stations is described as a precautionary security measure aimed at safeguarding the interests of investigations, suspects, and the general public.
