Nigeria's Youth Minister Advocates for Health Investment in 2026

At the Regional Youth Convening on Health and Development 2026, held at the United Nations House in Abuja, the Federal Government and stakeholders underscored the importance of investing in the health, education, skills, and economic opportunities of young people. Dr. Maryam Ismaila Keshinro, representing the Minister of Youth Development, Comrade Ayodele Olawande, stated that youth development should be viewed as a strategic investment.

She highlighted that access to quality healthcare and education is essential for young people to contribute to national and regional development. Key issues identified included mental health, sexual and reproductive health, nutrition, and gender-based violence.

Ms. Muriel Mafico, UNFPA Nigeria Resident Representative, noted that West and Central Africa has about 170 million individuals aged 10 to 24, emphasizing that a youthful population requires deliberate investment to yield a demographic dividend. She pointed out challenges such as child marriage and teenage pregnancy, urging governments to enhance adolescent-responsive healthcare services.
