Wike Accused of Unauthorized Loans for Abuja

Senator Ireti Kingibe, representing the Federal Capital Territory in the National Assembly, accused FCT Minister Nyesom Wike of borrowing funds for Abuja without the necessary approval from the National Assembly. During an interview on Channels Television’s Political Paradigm, Kingibe referenced records from the Debt Management Office indicating that the FCT's domestic debt surged from N88.51 billion in September 2023 to N389.88 billion by March 2026, marking an increase of N301.37 billion, or 340.5 percent.

Kingibe emphasized that the National Assembly has oversight responsibilities over the FCT Administration and should be involved in significant financial decisions. She stated that Wike has not appeared before the Senate to seek approval for any borrowing, only addressing the FCT Committee.

The FCT's debt increased sharply, moving from N78.93 billion in September 2025 to N188.86 billion by December 2025, and then to N389.88 billion by March 2026. Additionally, the FCT received N432.13 billion from the Federation Account during this period.
