Woman Arrested for Smuggling Drugs into Ogun Prison

Mrs Iyabo Sowunmi was arrested by the Ogun State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service for allegedly attempting to smuggle suspected illicit drugs into the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Ibara, Abeokuta, on Friday, August 28, 2026. The drugs, believed to be a psychoactive synthetic substance known as “Colos,” were concealed within a sachet of a popular beverage powder and intended for her son, Dare Sowunmi, who is currently on death row at the facility.

The arrest occurred at approximately 1:33 PM during routine screening at the facility's main entrance. Following the interception, Mrs Sowunmi was detained and subsequently handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for further investigation and prosecution.

Abioye Adesina, the Controller of Corrections for Ogun State, praised the security personnel for their vigilance and reiterated the zero-tolerance policy for drug trafficking within custodial facilities.
