Woman Arrested for Stealing Newborn in Kebbi State

On August 14, 2026, the Kebbi State Police Command arrested 19-year-old Khadija Ibrahim for allegedly stealing a newborn baby in Zuru Local Government Area. The incident took place on July 23, 2025, shortly after the biological mother, Fatima Muhammad, gave birth.

Khadija, a resident of Rikoto, reportedly pretended to assist Fatima by fetching hot water but fled with the newborn. Preliminary investigations indicated that Khadija had been under social and emotional pressure due to not having a child, as many of her peers had already given birth.

She deceived her husband for approximately nine months, convincing him that she was pregnant and later presented the stolen baby as their own. The police successfully recovered the baby and reunited her with Fatima.

Khadija remains in police custody and is expected to face charges following the investigation. Commissioner of Police, CP Umar Hadejia, praised the operatives for their professionalism in handling the case.
