Woman Arrested for Dumping Son in Edo River

Osaser, a 35-year-old woman, was apprehended for allegedly throwing her five-year-old son into the Edo River in the Ovia North East Local Government Area. A viral video captured the incident, showing fishermen attempting to rescue the child while Osaser was pursued to prevent her from being lynched.

Osaser explained that she had given birth to the child five years ago but had been unable to conceive again after suffering several miscarriages. A friend had taken her to a seer, who claimed that a python was responsible for consuming her womb and advised her to dispose of the child in the river to facilitate another pregnancy.

As of the time of reporting, the child's body had not been recovered. The Edo State Police Command spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, confirmed that Osaser was in police custody and that investigations were ongoing into the circumstances surrounding the case.
