Kogi NVMA Calls for Veterinarian Welfare and Recruitment

On World Veterinary Day, the Kogi State chapter of the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA), chaired by Dr. Tolu Omotugba, called for better welfare and the urgent recruitment of more veterinarians.

Currently, Nigeria has fewer than 10,000 veterinarians serving a population of 200 million, which is inadequate for ensuring food safety and public health. During a road walk in Lokoja, Omotugba emphasized the need for a monthly hazard stipend of N300,000 for veterinarians, similar to what medical doctors receive.

He warned against the dangers of quackery in the veterinary field, which can lead to antibiotic resistance and public health issues. The NVMA plans to meet with drug vendors on April 29 to enforce regulations.

Dr. Olufemi Bolarin commended veterinarians for their dedication despite challenging conditions and highlighted their essential role in disease prevention and ensuring safe food.

The Kogi State government, under Governor Usman Ododo, is prioritizing animal health services to strengthen the livestock industry.
