Veterinary Doctors Demand Action on Nasarawa Abattoir Hygiene

Veterinary doctors, led by Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA) President Dr. Mose Arokoyo, expressed serious concerns regarding the poor hygiene conditions at the Lafia modern abattoir in Nasarawa State. During an inspection on Tuesday, Arokoyo highlighted that the abattoir poses significant public health risks due to its unsanitary state, which could lead to outbreaks of diseases such as anthrax.

He urged the state government to intensify monitoring of abattoir operations and ensure compliance with sanitation laws. Recommendations included reconstructing the facility to provide adequate water supply and proper sanitation infrastructure.

Arokoyo noted that the abattoir, built 14 years ago, has not been adequately maintained, leading to a lack of essential facilities. The situation is exacerbated by a shortage of veterinary personnel, with only six veterinarians covering 13 local government areas.

The NVMA emphasized the need for immediate action to prevent health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations such as women.
