YCee Opens Up on Living with Bipolar Disorder in Nigeria

Nigerian rapper Oludemilad Martin Alejo, popularly known as YCee, disclosed that he has been battling bipolar disorder since 2020. In an interview with Aris TV, he expressed his struggles to access adequate treatment upon returning to Nigeria after his diagnosis in London.

The 33-year-old highlighted the significant gap in Nigeria's mental health infrastructure and noted that mental health is not a topic that is meaningfully engaged in Nigerian discourse. He contrasted the handling of mental health in the UK during the COVID-19 pandemic with the situation in Nigeria, where support services remain largely inaccessible.

YCee addressed the stigma surrounding mental illness in Nigeria, pointing out that many people dismiss depression as a privileged experience. He emphasized the need for more open conversations about mental health and criticized the broader collapse of Nigeria's healthcare system, which leaves millions without access to basic medical care.
