Yobe State Targets N15.9bn IGR by 2025

Yobe State has set a target to generate N15.9 billion in Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) by 2025, as announced by Suleiman Bakura, the Chairman of the Yobe State Internal Revenue Service, during an interview. The state aims to increase its revenue figures further in 2026.

Bakura emphasized the importance of implementing an automated revenue collection system, fostering inter-agency collaboration, and sustaining public sensitization to encourage tax compliance. He noted that the state’s tax collection policies would be aligned with modern economic realities, and digital tools would be deployed to enhance staff capacity.

The IGR for 2023 was reported at N11 billion. Upon assuming office in 2024, Bakura plans to address previous inefficiencies and leakage that hindered revenue generation, aiming to achieve the N15 billion target.

Governor Mai Mala Buni has enacted laws to ensure prudent resource management and fiscal stability. However, Bakura lamented that security challenges, particularly from Boko Haram insurgency, have significantly affected tax collection and disrupted infrastructure, leading to a shrinking tax base.
