Yobe State and UNDP to Provide Electric Tricycles for Waste Collectors

The Yobe State Government, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), has initiated plans to provide electric tricycles to informal pushcart waste collectors in Damaturu. This initiative, which operates under an earned-ownership model, aims to enhance doorstep waste collection and improve the livelihoods of these collectors.

Ismail Bunkar, a UNDP representative, announced this at a stakeholders’ workshop focused on waste management capacities in Yobe State. The project is part of Activity 4.2 of a Japan-funded initiative titled “Accelerating Recovery of Affected Communities from Security and Humanitarian Crises in Northeast Nigeria.” The earned-ownership model will allow waste collectors to acquire the tricycles, thereby improving their efficiency.

Additionally, a public awareness campaign will promote proper waste disposal practices among residents. The workshop, held at Briskpoint Hotel, Damaturu, was attended by various stakeholders, including government officials and traditional leaders.

Dr Mohammed Goje, Secretary to the Yobe State Government, emphasized the importance of effective waste management for public health and environmental sanitation.
