YPP Boycotts Anambra LG Elections Over Violence Claims

The Young Progressives Party (YPP) announced its boycott of the Anambra State local government elections, citing widespread violence and electoral irregularities. The party's Local Government Collation Agent for Anambra East, Charles Ifediora, reported that gunshots were fired in Otuocha, the headquarters of Anambra East Local Government Area, during the election.

Anambra East was unique among the 21 LGAs as it was the only area where an opposition party fielded candidates, with the YPP contesting all chairmanship and councillorship positions across 15 wards. Ifediora alleged that the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and the state government conspired to intimidate opposition members, preventing YPP agents from performing their duties.

He stated that security operatives from local vigilante groups were mobilized to disrupt the YPP's participation. An eyewitness, Uche Akaniro, confirmed the shooting incidents but noted that there were no major casualties reported.

The election was scheduled for Saturday, and the situation escalated as YPP supporters gathered to vote.
