YPP Condemns Blockade of Peter Obi's Convoy in Benue

The Young Progressives Party (YPP) condemned the reported obstruction of Mr. Peter Obi's convoy, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), during his visit to Yelwata community in Benue State. Obi was traveling to meet victims displaced by a recent attack when suspected thugs allegedly blocked his motorcade.

YPP's National Publicity Secretary, Martins Egbeola, issued a statement on Thursday in Abuja, calling for security agencies to identify, arrest, and prosecute those responsible for the incident. Egbeola described the blockade as disturbing and unacceptable, asserting that Obi, like any Nigerian, has the right to engage in lawful political activities without intimidation.

He criticized the Benue State Government's explanation regarding the incident and urged it to publicly condemn the blockade, apologize to Obi, and ensure the protection of constitutional freedoms. Egbeola warned that allowing political competition to devolve into intimidation and violence could undermine Nigeria's democracy and appealed for lawful conduct as political activities ramp up ahead of the 2027 elections.
