Zulum Approves N5.81bn Gratuity Payout for Workers

On a significant move to enhance the welfare of local government workers, Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State approved the release of N5.81 billion to clear the backlog of gratuities owed to retired civil servants and families of deceased workers. This payout, which totals N5,814,830,271.94, marks one of the state's largest pension settlement exercises aimed at alleviating the financial hardships faced by former public servants.

The governor presented the cheques during an event at the Government House in Maiduguri, reaffirming his administration's commitment to meet its obligations to workers. The total sum includes N2.99 billion for outstanding gratuities owed to families of deceased civil servants and N2.82 billion for gratuities owed to retirees as of December 2022.

Zulum's intervention fulfills a major campaign promise and intends to provide relief to families enduring financial uncertainty. The governor acknowledged the challenges local government workers face and assured that measures to improve their welfare are forthcoming.
