Zulum Approves N5.81bn Gratuity Payout for Workers

On a recent date, Borno State Governor Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum announced the approval of N5.81 billion to settle the backlog of gratuities owed to retired civil servants and families of deceased workers.

This initiative is part of the state's largest pension settlement exercise, aimed at alleviating the financial hardships faced by former public servants. During the presentation of the cheque worth N5,814,830,271.94 at the Government House in Maiduguri, Zulum reaffirmed his administration's commitment to meeting worker welfare obligations.

The total sum includes N2.99 billion for settling outstanding gratuities owed to families of deceased civil servants and N2.82 billion to clear gratuities for retirees as of December 2022. Zulum's intervention fulfills a major campaign promise and aims to provide relief for families enduring financial uncertainty.

The governor also acknowledged the challenges faced by local government workers and indicated plans to engage with their leaders to identify practical solutions for improving their welfare.
