Nigeria Petrol Imports and Refinery Output

Nigeria's petrol imports surged to 43% of total supply in July, despite the Dangote Petroleum Refinery's capacity to meet domestic demand. This increase raises concerns about the country's fuel market dynamics and the impact of imported petrol on local supply management.

Domestic refineries, led by Dangote Petroleum Refinery, supplied 75% of Nigeria's petrol from January to July 2026, totaling approximately 7.41 billion litres. This marks a significant increase from 2025, while petrol imports fell sharply to about 2.48 billion litres.

Nigeria's modular refining sector saw improved performance in July 2026, with Edo Refinery achieving a 95.72% capacity utilization. Combined diesel production from three refineries rose to 0.590 million litres per day, reflecting significant growth from June.
